That pretty much describes the relationship between Nae and her adoptive mother, Asami.
Asami took Nae under her wings when Nae was just a nymph, to train her to become a geisha... and also to try to recover what she lost in the past. At the same time Asami abuses the defenseless little Nae, for she harbours much pain from said past. Pain which she's wrongfully projecting or transferring onto Nae, because she can, because she needs an outlet. But this is not healthy, nor is it right.. and it's certainly terrible for Nae.
Most people will/already hate Asami, but I like her... XD

XD
This really sucks..! I don't hate her but can't say I like either. And I just really hope Nae will not turn out too bitter and demaged because of her. 8(
Beautiful, stunning, ageless, grasping. Lovely and remarkable work. You have been blessed with a beautiful talent by God. Please keep sharing your work.
man i love yer chars Asami and Nae, they are sooo cool, soo deep in their story and personalities, also i hope you don't get offended by me asking but, did you took some inspiration from the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha"? XD
Though I don't condone child abuse I understand where you’re coming from with this as tormented people do tend to take out their pain on others.
Also I have heard that the geisha mistress's who trained geisha in history were not always kind to them ether, so in that way this way this image makes a lot of sense.
I'd also be curious to see how this story will change over time as there could come a day when this story winds up as a role reverse with Nae holding the whip over her mother Asami in some form.
Nowadays we all know beating isn't that effective, talking is. But back them, people saw no difference between adults and children. A child was like an adult in miniature and so should be threated like one.
And yes, the life of a geisha or a geisha-to-be was VERY hard. I saw a documentary about a girl who was trying to become a maiko and it was just too hard, and it was nowadays, were everything is easier and people are nicer. Imagine how it would be in the old days XD
Well... you'll need to wait for the comic to be out to discover. It will be published somewhere in 2013.
I don't hate Asami, it's clear she have something inside that drive her to behave in this way. I love complicated characters! (and her little glasses, omg they're awesome )
